Alberta-Finland Relations

  • Finland was the only Nordic country to join the European Monetary Union at its initiation in 1999 and has been a member of the European Union since 1995.
  • Finland was an early supporter of Canada’s initiative to establish the Arctic Council, an inter-governmental forum promoting cooperation, coordination and interaction among Arctic states.
  • Signed in October 2016, the Canada EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was provisionally applied in September 2017. Under CETA, tariff elimination and other provisions will enhance the competitiveness of Canadian exports to Finland.
  • Trade is important to Finland, with exports accounting for over one-third of GDP in recent years.
