Germany

• As Europe’s largest economy and most populous region, Germany is a key player in the continent’s economic, political and defense organizations.
• Under the Canada EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), tariff elimination and other provisions will enhance the competitiveness of Canadian exports to Germany.
• The Government of Alberta supports the Alberta-Europe Collaboration Fund for Product Development and Commercialization delivered by the German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research in Edmonton. Over six years, 25 projects have been funded and over $5.3 million has been distributed to Alberta small and medium businesses working with German industry partners on new technologies.
• The Joint Declaration of Intent between Alberta and Bavaria, renewed in October 2017, expresses the wish of both governments to facilitate collaboration in the areas of research and technology, especially in the strategic sectors of clean technology, energy, digital technologies and life sciences, as well as encouraging joint participation of businesses in European and international research and innovation initiatives.
• The City and County of Leduc has been twinned with Grimma since 2005.
