Industry opportunities in Mexico exist for companies in the areas of oil and gas equipment and services, information and communication technologies, aerospace and defense, and agriculture and agri-foods.

Oil and Gas Equipment and Services

Mexico has engaged in an extensive process of opening up its energy sector to private investment, thereby increasing opportunities for Alberta oil and gas equipment and services exports to enter the new supply chains that are being developed by operators other than state-owned Pemex.

Areas of particular interest for Alberta companies are:
(1) the midstream space – supporting the development of additional capacity both in pipelines and even more so in storage;
(2) within the upstream sector, enhanced oil recovery technologies for mature fields; and depending on the result of an upcoming licensing round in the fall of 2018, and;
(3) solutions related to unconventional resource development.

While Mexico has a long history of oil and gas development, the new operators, as well as the reformed Pemex, are looking to adopt not just modern technologies, but also corporate best practices, which has created opportunities for Alberta organizations to offer capacity-building solutions for the Mexican oil and gas sector.

The Innovation and Commercialization Program between Alberta and its Mexican sister state Jalisco provides an opportunity for small- and medium-sized companies from both jurisdictions to collaborate on innovative technology development leading to commercialization opportunities that will enhance trade.

Aerospace and Defense

There is significant interest in Mexico in the technologies and services available from the Alberta aerospace sector, in particular in the areas of pilot training and unmanned aerial vehicle systems.

Agriculture and Agri-foods

The sector still represents by far the highest percentage of Alberta exports to Mexico. Alberta’s exporters already have a strong position in livestock and genetics, and there is good momentum in food ingredients and animal feed. Emerging and expanding opportunities exist in the areas of consumer packaged food products as well as equipment, technologies and services for the agriculture and livestock industry.
