Alberta-Switzerland Relations
- Switzerland does not belong to the European Union. A proposal in 2002 to open talks was heavily defeated in a national referendum.
- In January 2008, Canada signed a free trade agreement with the four countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA): Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
- Switzerland’s GDP per capita is one of the highest in Europe, making it an attractive export market.
- Major Swiss companies operating in Alberta include Nestle, ABB, and Union Banque Suisse (UBS).
