OPPORTUNITIES IN MEXICO

Mexico is a market which presents ample opportunities for Alberta companies in a variety of sectors. Given its size, its relative geographic and cultural proximity, its membership of NAFTA, and its ongoing transformation into a more liberal economy with an increasing share of more complex, higher value-add industries. At the same time, Mexico is not an easy market to navigate due to different business practices and requires genuine export readiness and significant commitment on the part of Alberta companies for them to be successful.

Mexican buyers tend to be price-sensitive, and while they often have an interest in diversifying their sources of supply, they also have a traditional bias in favour of the United States as the place from which to source new technology. Before making more complex procurement decisions, Mexican business people need to develop a relationship of trust with their foreign providers and generally expect them to have a local presence or at least a local partner, with whom they can interact in Spanish.
